Tattoos express individualityAs a tattoo is grounded on living skin, its essence emotes a poignancy, unique to the mortal human condition. In India, while the tattooing rage caught on several years ago, it is only recently that students have started sporting them in a big way. An increasing number of youngsters now visit tattoo parlours for elaborate and personalised designs. For them, tattoos are a means of expressing their individuality through words and symbols.
No more a social tabooParents too have started accepting this trend and it is not a social taboo anymore. This could have something to do with the fact that tattooing procedures are now very safe and leading parlours in the city have high hygiene standards. "Each of my tattoos has a specific meaning and I chose them based on what I like," says Prasna Padmanaban, a college student.
A huge trendThere are many tattoo parlours in the city, which specialise in custom-made tattoos too. "Many college goers and young working professionals get these custom-made tattoos done, because they don't want to do with the usual designs. We get several housewives too," says Amar, a designer from a leading tattoo parlour. The fact that many youth icons and celebrities too sport eye-catching designs has only further inspired the youth to follow suit.
Wings, most popular designDesigners say that the most popular designs are wings (symbolising freedom) and eagles (which represent God). However, there are some artists who feel that tattooing in Chennai is still in its teething stages and that it will take some for mindsets to change, allowing for more parlours to open up.
Tattoo time! Here are some points to ponder before getting a tattoo: For those who don't want anything permanent, there is always the option of getting a temporary tattoo which is painted on the skin. This lasts a few days, depending upon the care one takes. One must be very careful while getting a tattoo. Make sure the place you are going to, has a good reputation. Discuss your design with the artist before beginning the process. Ensure the needle is properly sterilised. It would be preferable to use a new one.
